What is a Sleep Study?
Sleep studies are held at local sleep labs, where you will be observed by staff and monitored by equipment while you sleep. The results of your sleep study will be sent to your physician, who will meet with you to discuss if you have Sleep Apnea and how to treat it.
How is Sleep Apnea treated?
Sleep studies show that Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common form of the disorder. It’s caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the
throat collapses and closes during sleep. Sleep Apnea can be treated with CPAP machines, dental devices or as a last resort, surgery.
CPAP Machines: the Most Effective Sleep Apnea Treatment
The American Sleep Apnea Association recommends
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines as the most effective method for treating OSA. A CPAP machine works by gently blowing pressurized room air through the airway at a pressure high enough to keep the throat open. Many insurance companies require use of a CPAP machine before Sleep Apnea surgery. If needed, your physician will prescribe a CPAP machine for you.
